The Government was facing a fresh headache over a third runway at Heathrow Airport after Labour suggested it could oppose expansion and analysis showed northern airports will lose out on thousands of international flights if it went ahead. Theresa May is already being challenged by several west London-based Tory MPs ready to oppose a third runway and may have to rely on votes from the SNP and DUP to get it through the Commons in the coming weeks. The decision to press ahead with expansion of the airport was announced on Tuesday after years of wrangling and delay.

KEIGHLEY’S MP is backing calls for more Government cash to be given to Childline. John Grogan and 15 other MPs from the region have signed an open letter demanding that funding for the charity be increased. It follows revelations that Childline is being contacted by record numbers of young people struggling with suicidal thoughts. The charity currently receives £1.7 million annually from the Government as part of a four-year grant. But it is reliant on public support to maintain its services, with 80 per cent of funding being received through voluntary donations.

PLANS for a new 640-pupil primary school have been the go ahead by councillors. The new school - which will replace the former Hothfield and Aire View junior and infant schools in Silsden - went before Bradford Council’s Regulatory and Appeals Committee yesterday. Last year, the Council unveiled initial proposals for the school buildings, grounds and access roads after an extensive search for a suitable site for a new school to relieve overcrowding at the existing schools. Hothfield and Aire View merged last September to become Silsden Primary School, using both their existing sites, in readiness for the move to the new site at Hawber Cote Lane.

A MASSIVE £4.8 million initiative is being launched to stimulate economic growth and jobs in Keighley. The sweeping programme will help regenerate some of the town's most deprived areas. Euro cash totalling £2.4m, which will be match-funded through various sources, has been secured. Support, education and skills will be provided to unemployed people, raising their aspirations and helping them into work. And there will be grants for new businesses and to help existing ones grow.
