KEIGHLEY MP John Grogan has lent his support to townspeople running the Big Local regeneration programme. He met with volunteer residents who lead the Big Local Partnership’s efforts to improve the ‘Keighley Valley’ zone. Mr Grogan extended his regular surgery to meet Partnership members Claire Lockyer, Fiona Thompson, Claire Young, Kelly Turner and Rana Bagum. He heard about a host of community projects being carried out neighbourhoods alongside the River Worth such as Stockbridge, Worth Village, Hainworth Wood, Parkwood, and Red Holt at Ingrow.

"Justice is not high enough up the political agenda" a Catholic Labour MP told the annual gathering of the National Justice and Peace Network of England and Wales at the weekend. John Grogan of the Keighley Constituency in Yorkshire singled out benefit sanctions as a key area for advocacy work. He praised his local SVP for supporting disabled and vulnerable people suffering because of the cutting or withholding of benefits, and urged his audience of around 200 J&P activists to stay engaged with poverty issues and "don't give up on democracy".

BOSSES of Sainsbury’s and Asda insist they plan to keep both stores open in Keighley following the companies’ planned merger. But in a top-level discussion with Keighley MP John Grogan they admitted they might be forced to close one of the stores to avoid breaching competition rules. Mr Grogan quizzed Roger Burnley and Mike Coupe, the chief executives of Asda and Sainsbury’s, during a recent session of the Parliamentary Select Committee on the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. He sought reassurances about the future of the two local stores – which lie on either side of the railway track in central Keighley – and terms and conditions for staff across the country.

ILKLEY'S MP John Grogan has called a campaign by a fellow MP to break the town away from the control of Bradford Council a "costly diversion in time and money for the local taxpayer". Conservative MP Philip Davies has recently launched his Leave Bradford Council campaign, and is collecting signatures on a petition. It is calling for the Parliamentary constituencies of Shipley - which includes Menston and Burley-in-Wharfedale and Keighley - which includes Ilkley - currently part of Bradford Council, to become their own separate local authority. Mr Davies, the Shipley MP, has been calling for the split for several years, and made it one of his pledges in the last General Election. It was backed by former Conservative MP for Ilkley Kris Hopkins.
