KEIGHLEY’S MP is supporting demands that more cash be injected into schools. John Grogan was speaking after the Government responded to a petition protesting at cuts to school funding in the area. The petition – signed by 1,530 people – was organised by Craven ward Labour Party, which said primary schools in Steeton, Eastburn, Silsden and Addingham had all seen real-term reductions in pupil funding. It called for the cuts to be reversed and per-pupil funding protected over the lifetime of this parliament, together with a guarantee that no school would lose out as a result of any new funding formula.

Civic leaders will hold key talks on ‘One Yorkshire’ devolution on Thursday with their unity tested after the Local Government Secretary refused to open discussions on a deal backed by the overwhelming majority. James Brokenshire has written to Sheffield City Region (SCR) Mayor Dan Jarvis and all the region’s 20 councils, 18 of which support a One Yorkshire deal, to say the Government is “not prepared” to discuss the proposals as they currently stand.

If the home nations submit a bid to host the 2030 World Cup, the government must not bow to pressure from Fifa and amend its laws protecting the tournament’s TV rights from being sold to the highest bidder, parliament will be told on Wednesday. Just hours before England take on Croatia in the World Cup semi-final there will be an adjournment debate in parliament to discuss listed sporting events, those protected for free-to-air television. After the doomed bid for the 2018 World Cup, it emerged that the government had indicated it was prepared to kowtow to Fifa and pledge there would be no restrictions on TV coverage of the tournament.

A former Minister has become the first Conservative MP to publicly back an all-Yorkshire devolution deal with powers and money flowing to the region from Westminster. Ex-Immigration Minister Robert Goodwill told the Government “doing nothing is not an option” with 18 out of 20 of the region’s councils backing ‘One Yorkshire’.
