THE CREAM of Keighley and Airedale’s business community has been recognised in a sixth annual awards scheme. A glittering presentation ceremony was staged at Keighley’s Victoria Hall on Friday. The sell-out event, attended by over 250 people, was compered by BBC TV presenter Harry Gration. Guests included Lord Mayor of Bradford Councillor Zafar Ali and the Lady Mayoress, Bradford Council leader Cllr Susan Hinchcliffe, MP John Grogan and town mayor Cllr Fulzar Ahmed. The Keighley and Airedale Business Awards this year attracted a record number of entries.

A TEA party is being staged in Keighley on Saturday to mark 100 years since women – and working-class men – got the vote. The event – in the Airedale Shopping Centre, from noon to 2pm – is being hosted by Keighley MP John Grogan and town mayor Councillor Fulzar Ahmed.

STEETON AFC have received backing from the town's MP as they embark on the first rung of the non-league football ladder. Promoted from the West Riding County Amateur League, the club begins next season in the semi-professional Hallmark Security League Division One North (North West Counties). The club has secured a pitch-sharing agreement with Keighley Cougars rugby league club and will play all home games at the Cougar Park Stadium. It is a big move for the club and heralds the establishment of a semi-professional football club for Keighley, something the town’s football-loving public have been crying out for.

A NEW incinerator tax should be brought in to discourage this type of "unwanted" waste disposal, according to Keighley's MP. The call was made by John Grogan in the House of Commons, when he addressed Michael Gove, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Mr Grogan asked: "Given the recent report that indicated there is an excess of incineration capacity in the United Kingdom, which is discouraging recycling, is there not a case now for a tax on incineration, or even a moratorium on new incinerators?"
