GROUSE shooting on Ilkley Moor has officially come to an end, after Bradford Council’s deed which formerly permitted the controversial practice expired at midnight on Tuesday, The official end of grouse shooting on Ilkley Moor has been welcomed by campaigners. Ban Bloodsports on Ilkley Moor (BBIM) has lobbied Bradford Council to end grouse shooting on the moor since its formation in May 2014. Luke Steele, spokesperson for BBIM, said: “Bradford Council’s decision to end grouse shooting on Ilkley Moor is to be commended in the highest terms. It reflects the urgent need to reverse wildlife decline, habitat degradation and public dismay which has overshadowed this treasured moorland since grouse shooting was introduced in 2008.

ILKLEY'S MP John Grogan has used a speech in Parliament to call for an increase in the number of people paying inheritance tax. The extra money raised would be used to ensure that everybody who needs it in later life would get free social care at home or in care homes, said Mr Grogan. He added: "I think that many people in our society who are lucky enough to own their own home would accept that bargain - a guarantee that they could get free care and pass on the bulk of their estate to members of their family or to any good causes they wanted to support, in return for which I think they would be prepared to pay an additional inheritance tax."

The replacement of Sajid Javid with James Brokenshire as Local Government Secretary could being new impetus to the campaign for a Yorkshire-wide devolution deal, according to an MP. Mr Javid has been appointed Home Secretary in a Cabinet reshuffle forced by the resignation of Amber Rudd, after she after admitted she had "inadvertently" misled MPs over her immigration targets while being questioned about the Windrush scandal. He was appointed by telephone by Prime Minister Theresa May the morning after Ms Rudd's departure, and becomes the first Home Secretary from an ethnic minority background.

SERVICES to remember those who have died at work were held in Bradford and Keighley today. The district was marking International Workers Memorial Day. In Bradford a small crowd of people gathered in the memorial garden in Norfolk Gardens, while in Keighley a crowd including Keighley and Ilkley MP John Grogan paid their respects in Town Hall Gardens. The Health and Safety Executive says 137 people died in the workplace in the UK last year, although the number is thought to be much higher when taking into account workplace related illnesses.
