SILSDEN residents are uniting to save a much-loved stretch of Silsden countryside from bulldozers. Silsden Campaign Group for the Countryside has been formed in the wake of more than 300 objections to plans to build a road across three footpaths to serve a potential housing estate. Keighley MP John Grogan this week pledged his support for the campaign against the ‘enabling road’ across fields between Bolton Road, Hawber Lane at Swartha, and Banklands. The road is also intended to provide a secondary access route to the new Silsden Primary School, which has already gained planning permission from Bradford Council.

A CAMPAIGN group battling to restore a former railway line is holding another open meeting. The Skipton-East Lancashire Rail Action Partnership (SELRAP) will report on the latest situation. The group is spearheading efforts to get the 12-mile Skipton to Colne line, which closed in 1970, reopened.

A host of local arts groups have united to press the Arts Council to fund the economy-boosting event from its Creating Civic Change pot. Dozens of volunteers gathered on Tuesday to tell Arts Minister Michael Ellis about early plans for Window On the World (WOW) when he visited Keighley. Belly dancers and a poet were among those who performed for Mr Ellis at the Creative Space arts centre in the former Sunwin House building on Hanover Street.

IMPROVEMENTS to the canal towpath between Riddlesden and Silsden have been officially unveiled. A community celebration was held in Silsden last Saturday to mark the ‘re-opening’ of the 2.7km section of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. The resurfacing work was carried out as part of a £2.9m package of government-funded work across the county to boost cycling and walking access along for canals. This was in turn part of West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s £60m CityConnect programme aimed at encouraging more people to cycle and walk.
