Following a request from Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves I have helped the Labour Party set up a Yorkshire and Humber Labour Business Forum. This organises meetings where Labour’s Shadow Cabinet team can explain their ideas and take their message to business leaders in the region.

I am pleased to have received a nomination to stand as Labour’s Keighley parliamentary candidate from the Labour Movement for Europe. The Labour Party accepts that Britain is now outside the European Union but that there is a clear case to have a more positive relationship with our neighbours and allies. Our trade with both the European Union and the rest of the world has declined since Brexit and exports have not recovered after COVID as they have in other major European economies. In the fields of the economy, education  the environment and fighting crime there is much scope for increased co-operation.

Whilst I was an MP, I always worked closely with the trade unions. For example, with the CWU opposing plans to privatise Royal Mail; with Unison and the GMB on opposing the creation of stand-alone companies at NHS Hospitals with inferior terms and conditions; with Usdaw on their Sunday Trading Campaign; and with Unite and Community on issues concerning manufacturing. All six of these unions have nominated me for Keighley.

Clarity is needed on where the Government stands this morning on two key policy issues central to the future of the North of England. The brief Truss led administration started a review of the decision to privatise Channel 4 and also re committed itself to building in full Northern Powerhouse Rail which would mean a high-speed link across the Pennines linking Leeds, Bradford and Manchester.

Today in Barnsley, the Yorkshire and Humber Labour Party meets for its regional conference with the General Election fast approaching. One question on most minds will be what should the next Parliament and Government of the United Kingdom do to truly level up Yorkshire and the Humber?
